Rachel Carson had an incredible talent of making the ocean easy for people to understand. Jacques Cousteau was able to bring his passion for the ocean to the movies so that people around the world could see the ocean for themselves. Now it’s your turn! Using the below prompts as a guide, write a poem or song describing the beach to someone who has never seen or heard of the ocean before.

First, close your eyes and imagine you are standing on the beach. Think about the different senses and how your body is reacting to them.

What do you taste, smell, feel, hear, and see?

What sounds do you hear when you stand on the beach?

Ask an adult to help you find sounds of the beach on the internet if you haven’t been to the beach or it’s been awhile.

How does your skin feel when you are at the beach? Are you hot? Is the wind blowing in your hair? Does your skin feel sticky with sunscreen? Are you hiding under the shade of an umbrella?

How does the sand feel? Is it cold and damp? Is it dry and itchy?

What do you smell? Can you smell the saltwater? Does the air smell like fish or like seaweed?

Now, write a poem or song describing the beach to someone who has never seen or heard of the ocean. Try to be as descriptive as possible and use the above prompts to help spark new ideas.
