Catching Someone in a Lie
In order to be a successful spy, it is important to know when someone is telling the truth. It is not always easy to catch someone in a lie, however, there are a few tell-tale ways to find out if someone isn’t being truthful.
BODY LANGUAGE
When a person is telling the truth, their body language shows it. Their shoulders should be relaxed and their hands are in an open and comfortable position. If a person is responding “Yes” to a question, but they’re shaking their head “no,” that is an obvious sign that someone is lying.
PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR LIPS
If you are interrogating a person and they curl their lips inward, hiding the fullness of their lips, chances are they aren’t being honest.
LISTEN TO HOW THEY ARE TALKING
Is the person talking a LOT? Are they talking in circles or repeating the same thing over and over again? Are they confusing the facts or changing facts frequently? Ding, ding, ding! There is a very good chance the person isn’t being 100% truthful. Why would someone mess up important facts if they were telling the truth?
LISTEN TO THEIR VOICE
Is your suspect’s voice suddenly very high pitched when answering a question? When a person is lying, the muscles in their throat tighten up as a response to stress, making their voice more high pitched.
WHERE ARE THEIR HANDS?
Is the person you’re interrogating touching their ears or lips, biting their nails, or wringing their hands? When someone is lying, their nervous system is triggered and their body starts signaling symptoms of anxiety. A lying person will touch their face or wring their hands in response to that anxiety as a way to decrease stress hormones in the body.
WATCH THE EYES
Make sure to pay attention to the person’s pupils, the dark circle in the center of the eye. If the pupils are big and round, known as being dilated, the person is lying. The brain has to work really hard when trying to lie, so the pupils become large as a result. Also, if a person won’t look you in the eye, that’s also a tell-tale sign that something fishy might be going on.
