SPY AGENCIES AROUND THE WORLD

There are many different espionage and intelligence organizations. Have you heard of the CIA, the Central Intelligence Agency? The CIA is part of the United States government, and it is responsible for gathering information about things happening in other parts of the world. They might do this by listening in on calls, reading messages, or talking to people to learn about events. The CIA’s members then take covert, or “secret,” action to influence what happens around the world.

The CIA was not the first intelligence organization. When President Truman created the agency in 1947, he was inspired by the success of British intelligence agencies during World Wars I and II. In 1909, Britain created the Secret Service Bureau. The parts of this organization that spied on other countries became known as the Military Intelligence or “MI” sections. They were given different numbers to tell them apart from one another. MI6 was very successful during World War II and the entire organization is sometimes called MI6 today.

Other intelligence organizations are even older than Britain’s. India’s Intelligence Bureau, or IB, is the oldest one still active! It was created in 1887 when India was a colony in the British Empire. Today, India is an independent country and the IB is still hard at work. Originally, workers in the IB spied on people in India who didn’t want the country to be a colony anymore. Today, the IB is part of the Indian government. For many years it carried out espionage on other countries, but today that work is done by the Research and Analysis Wing. The IB now focuses on looking out for threats inside India.

Intelligence organizations often try to get information on each other and compete to have the best spies and technology. The CIA is often in competition with Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, or SVR (the letters come from its name in Russian). The SVR was created in 1920. It sometimes works with other countries, like Russia’s neighbor China, to gather information. It sends spies into other countries to gather information and also tries to shape how people think about Russia.

There are also many different intelligence organizations that no longer exist today. For example, the Roman Empire had agencies that were responsible for spying and gathering information. The agentes in rebus were officials stationed throughout the empire. They worked for the government and collected information, which they then reported back. They had other responsibilities as well and they weren’t focused only on spying, but it was still a big part of what they did.
