Lions once roamed southern
Europe before they went extinct
more than a thousand years ago.

The volcano, Mount Vesuvius, erupted in 79 AD and covered the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in ash. The cities weren’t found again until the 1700s.

Herculaneum tell us a lot about
life in the Roman Empire.
If you lived in the empire,
you could be granted Roman
citizenship. This meant that
you could vote, stand for
public office, and also receive
a certain amount of free grain
to make your daily bread.
