Like people today, the Vikings used glue for all sorts of projects. From waterproofing their boats to cementing things together, glue played an important role in the Viking’s day-to-day life. Using the recipe ahead, experiment to see how well the glue works on fastening popsicle sticks together to make a boat or how well the glue keeps water off an object.

MATERIALS

  • 1½ cups milk
  • 3 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Spoon

  • Jar

STEP 1

Heat the milk in a pan; once warm, add the white vinegar. Keep heating and stirring the mixture until the solid parts (curds) separate from the liquid (whey).

STEP 2

Using the strainer and jar, separate the curds from the whey, then place the curds back in the pan. Add a little water and the baking soda, then heat the mixture until it bubbles.

STEP 3

Stir the mixture really well, then let it cool. Once cooled, add more water or baking soda as needed to get the glue texture you want.

STEP 4

Do several experiments using the glue to see how well it holds things together.
