Dear Young Historians,
This issue holds a special place in my heart. And while I love all the issues we put together, this one is different. I grew up in Eastern Europe in two countries that were part of Kievan Rus'—Belarus and Ukraine. Even though this issue is focused on Russia, many of the cultural traditions and customs are the same within each of the three countries.
I grew up learning about the harsh winters in Siberia and learned a variety of ways to say snow and describe snowfall. I was yelled at by old ladies for sitting on the cold ground (you will learn why!) and grew up visiting the Peterhof trick fountains. You see, this issue is basically describing parts of my childhood!
I am so excited to share this issue and to focus on just a few of the many reasons Russia is an amazing country. Too often, historians focus on the Russian Revolution and the rise of Communism. It was a time when millions of people in the Soviet Union suffered at the hands of greedy men who wanted to wield power. But Russia has a beautiful and rich history. And while it is not perfect, it is nonetheless a history that should be learned and shared.
So without further ado, welcome to the home of my ancestors and home to my childhood memories. Welcome to Russia!
Cheers,
Editor-In-Chief
