A Letter for
Young Historians

Dear Young Historians,

Coming up with the topic for each magazine isn’t always easy, but sometimes, it just hits like a bolt of lightning! It was a warm and sunny day, and I was sitting on my porch talking to my neighborhood postal carrier when I thought, “I wonder how the US postal system works?” The rest, well, is history!

I had so much fun researching this topic because I felt like I learned so much in the process. From Benjamin Franklin, mail cars, and million-dollar stamps, I’ve had an enjoyable lesson in American history, one that I never realized was missing.
Learning about the history of the postal service around the world was another fascinating topic. And I realized an important thing early on in my research—communication has always been at the very heart of every civilization. Humans need to talk to one another, and thanks to the postal service, we can communicate the same way our ancestors did thousands of years ago.

I hope that, as you turn and read the final page of this issue, you will feel inspired to write to a friend or a loved one and will continue this age-old tradition of sending letters. You can even write to me using the postcard provided! Regardless of who you write to, send a letter, and experience the joy of this historic process.

Cheers,
