Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Make sure you start by wetting your hands, then lathering the soap. Sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice, from beginning to end, and make sure you dry your hands when done. Voila! You just killed a bunch of nasty germs!

When should you wash your hands?

• When you get home from school, the playground, the store, or basically any time you leave the house.
• Did you pet the neighbor’s cat? Wash your hands!
• Before and after preparing food (even if it’s food for yourself!).
• After using the bathroom (bathrooms can be gross …so make sure to wash your hands!).
• After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
• After touching someone who is sick.

What should you do if you can’t wash your hands?

Ask an adult for a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. This kills germs and will help prevent sickness until you can find running water and soap.
