A Letter to Young Historians

Hey, Young Historians,

Vikings! Most of us think of them only as fierce and fearsome warriors who raided and pillaged, but the Vikings were also expert craftsmen, farmers, and artisans. Viking children had toys and were allowed to play. Viking women had more freedom than women from other cultures.

As historians, it’s important to remember that individuals and cultures are not one and the same. Therefore, we should not put people in a box, but instead, try to discover all there is to know about them, how their lives and the societies of the past affect our world in the present.

This issue of Honest History only reveals the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more to learn about the Vikings, so go to your local library, do the research, and set off on an adventure of discovery! I promise you will likely find something that will surprise you.

Happy reading!
