An egg-cellent
hiding place

Can you think of a more unsuspecting hiding place for a secret message than an egg? We can’t either! Learn how women from the Sealed Knot passed secret messages to each other using this fun technique. This experiment takes a while, so let’s get started.

ITEMS NEEDED

- Eggs
- Vinegar
- A razor blade
 (ask an adult)

- A small piece of paper
- A pen
- Cold water
- A glass

STEP 1 Put an egg in a glass and submerge it in vinegar. Let the egg soak in vinegar for 4-5 hours.

STEP 2 While the egg is soaking, write out a secret message on the piece of paper using the pen. Fold up the message so it is small, but lays flat. We recommend using a piece of paper that is a little bigger than the size of a quarter.

STEP 3 Remove the egg from the vinegar and gently pat dry.

STEP 4 With the help of an adult, take the razor and cut a small slit into the egg and eggshell.

STEP 5 Next, take the folded message and slip it inside the slit in the egg.

STEP 6 Take the egg and place the egg in cold water and let it soak for 24 hours.

STEP 7 After 24 hours, crack the egg open and see if the hidden message is still inside.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Do you think the egg looks different than a regular egg after the experiment?

Try using different color ink or a pencil and see if the experiment still works.

If you leave the egg to soak in water longer, say two days, do you notice a change in the egg or the condition of the message?
