I’m not going to lie, creating this issue was tough! Unlike some of our other topics where we had to dig and dig to find information, when it comes to ancient Rome, there is almost too much information to decipher.
But unlike our other topics, we had to do a lot of fact-checking. And when I say a lot—I mean A LOT! When you are dealing with something ancient, it becomes harder to figure out which specific date an event occurred. For events that are thousands of years old, historians are likely to get some dates wrong—and it’s not their fault. As researchers and historians ourselves, we did our absolute best to make sure that the dates we used are accurate, but like historians before us, we may get a date or two slightly wrong based on the information that is available.
The great thing about history is that we are always learning new things about the past. In fact, new evidence could be discovered as I am writing this very sentence, proving a date to be incorrect or letting historians know that we got the dates right after all.
To me, that is the most exciting part of ancient history—the fact that new discoveries are being made every single day. These discoveries let us know so much more about the past and how those before us lived. Although this issue was difficult to write, it was also a lot of fun to learn about the ancient Romans and how they lived. I can’t wait for you to dive in and learn all about one of the greatest civilizations of all time. Enjoy!
