Measure This

Prior to the 3rd century BC, Roman measurement was based on the standards set by the Greeks, but much of that changed through influences from the Egyptians and Mesopotamians. While some of the words and measurements may sound foreign, take a closer look and you might recognize some similarities between how ancient Romans and modern Americans measure.

The basic unit of measurement in ancient Rome was the “pes” or Roman foot. It was also pronounced “pedes” when being used in the plural sense.

A cubit is the length from the tip of the index finger to the elbow.

A passus is the closest measurement to a yard.

The ancient Roman measurement for an inch was uncia.

Stadium was a unit of measure because it was the length of most sports stadiums at the time.
