Try this little electricity “magic” trick next time you visit your friend’s house. It will surely be a way to impress everyone with your magic skills.
What you will need:
One nylon or plastic comb
A water tap
STEP 1
Turn on the water tap so you get a very small flow of water (the stream of water should be smaller than the width of a pencil).
STEP 2
Run the comb through your hair 10-15 times. Make sure your hair is dry!
STEP 3
Slowly move the comb toward the stream of water. What happens to the water?
STEP 4
Repeat the experiment and change how much water is flowing. Does the water move toward the comb like it did the first time?
Try doing the experiment on wet hair. What happens? Do you get the same results?
Try holding the comb very close to a small piece of paper after you brush the comb through your hair a few times. Does anything happen?
Why does this trick work? Because running the comb through your hair builds up an electrical charge in the comb. Electrons in your hair are transferred to the comb and create a positive charge in the comb. Since opposite charges are attracted to each other, what charge is the water? Positive or negative?
