Plague Pomanders

It’s strange to think about now, but people used to believe that bad-smelling air caused the plague and other illnesses. This air was called miasma. Europeans carried small bags of sweet-smelling herbs and dried fruits as protection against miasma and getting sick. These bundles were called pomanders, and while they won’t stop you from getting sick, they are fun to make at home!

First, wash and dry your orange.

Poke holes all over your orange with a toothpick. You can make any design you want!

Push a whole clove into each hole. You can also sprinkle spices like cinnamon or nutmeg onto the pomander for added scent.

Hang your pomander up to dry in a cool, dark place for about a week. Once it is dry, your pomander will last for months!

You can display your pomander, hang it up for decoration, or place it in a drawer with clothes.
