Lost Colonial Phrases

Language changes over time. While we still use many words from the 18th century, others have fallen out of use. Want to sound like you’re from George Washington’s time? Try using some of these words and phrases.

Caught the Pip

to have a sore throat or feel unwell

"I foolishly did not wear a warm coat and caught the pip."

Cleverly

in good health

"He was very ill last week, but he is cleverly now."

Fudge!

Nonsense!

"Fudge! I would not believe a word that man says."

Gallinipper

a large mosquito or other biting insect

"She was bitten by those bloodthirsty gallinippers!"

Gut-foundered

extremely hungry

"I wish dinner were ready because I am gut-foundered!"

Jollification

a celebration or merrymaking

"After they won the battle, they spent the morning in a jollification."
